To keep a good high-speed signal quality from driver to receiver on a PCB is not an easy task for designers. One of the most challenging issues is managing the propagation delay and relative time delay mismatches. Let me take you through the process...

If you migrated from CR-5000 Board Designer you might recall my ToolTip a few years back, specific to using the Parameter Resource file, in order to save and reuse settings you define within the tool such as route parameters or dimension parameters. The data resource file in the Design Force is the equivalent to that parameters resource file.

A function that pushes tracks away and avoids obstacles when a via is moved has been added. This is a great advantage for the designer when routing. What use to take a lot of time to move traces and vias to move a via to a new location has been greatly enhanced using the “Activ-45 Router”.

In part 1 of this blog we took a back-to-basics approach and discussed line impedance and its effects in signal integrity. As every electrical conductor comprises capacitance, an inductance, and a frequency-dependent ohmic resistance, and with increasing frequencies, these electrical characteristics will influence and distort the signal.

PCB design tools were built on 2D software methods in the 1980s. Many of today’s design tools still use that 2D code base. Mechanical tools have moved on to native 3D design. PCB has been stuck more or less in the 2D world. Extensions to the 2D code base made 2.5D and 3D visualization possible. But designing in 3D requires the tool to be built on a 3D kernel.

Impedance and impedance control belong to the oldest and most often discussed topics in PCB design. They are especially important with the high-speed design when related to signal integrity. In this, the first of a two-part blog, we’ll go back to the basics of impedance/impedance control and consider what influences line impedance. In part two, we’ll set about controlling it.
