Halloween Tips and Tricks: 6 Spells for Smarter Electrical & Electronic Design

Menu

An oracle peers into your schematics. A necromancer frees captive connector pins. An enchanted design file vanishes when the clock strikes midnight. This Halloween, the Zuken team reveals its secret spells, each with a practical purpose.

This year’s Halloween Tips and Tricks reveal ways to catch circuit errors, create clear documentation, and reduce design time in CR-8000 and E3.series. Grab your favorite candy and follow along with the videos. These tricks can improve your design workflow long after the pumpkins disappear.

CR-8000 Halloween Tips and Tricks

Circuit Adviser: Your All-Seeing Oracle

Reversed polarity. Components pushed beyond their limits. Missing design information. These horrors can lurk unnoticed in your schematics, waiting to haunt PCB layout and manufacturing.

Summon Circuit Adviser in CR-8000 Design Gateway to reveal hidden schematic problems. This all-seeing oracle checks component properties, assigned net voltages, and engineering rules before potential errors haunt your schematic.

The oracle reveals its findings in four steps:

  1. Set conditions: Define component properties, expected voltages, and customizable verification rules.
  2. Review results: See how many potential errors the verification identifies.
  3. Locate errors: Navigate directly to each identified error.
  4. Generate reports: Document the findings for review and follow-up.

Consult the oracle and uncover schematic horrors before they become costly rework nightmares.

The Clock Strikes Midnight with IP Management

The clock strikes midnight, and your shared design file turns to dust—or at least refuses to open. Its secrets are sealed away, thanks to an enchantment you prepared before sending it beyond your company walls.

Cast the spell with IP Management in CR-8000 Design Force. Create an IP-managed file and configure three controls before sharing it:

  1. Choose what’s revealed: Select which design information enters the shared copy. Excluded details remain in your original file.
  2. Limit its powers: Specify which functions recipients can execute.
  3. Set the final hour: Assign an expiration date, after which the file can no longer be opened.

Then let the countdown begin. When the appointed hour arrives, the IP-managed file expires and can no longer be opened. No encore. No second act. By limiting what recipients can access and how long they can access it, IP Management helps protect sensitive design information when collaborating with external partners.

E3.series Halloween Tips and Tricks

The Necromancer’s Connector Placement Spell

The necromancer summons a connector from the database, but its pins remain trapped inside a grouped symbol. While grouped symbols work well for high-level diagrams, detailed schematics often require individual pins for separate connections.

Previously, designers relied on two methods to place connectors with individual pin symbols:

  • Place single pins from the database context menu
  • Split/merge after placing the connector.

But repeating these rituals can haunt your design time.

Fortunately, E3.series 2027 introduces a new spell that makes single-pin placement easier with a new setting in the sheet properties. Enable “Prefer single pins when placing connector,” and connectors dragged from the database arrive with their individual pins displayed, ready to connect.

Each liberated pin can connect to its own destination, with the appropriate wire type assigned independently. Need a grouped symbol? The database context menu still lets you summon one.

Free the pins, retire the repetitive rituals, and save precious design time before the clock strikes midnight.

Wire Color Insertion Views: Bring Formboards Out of the Shadows

On this dark and stormy night, something unsettling hides within your harness documentation. Which wire connects to each pin? Where can technicians find the information?

Bring those details out of the shadows with Harness Builder for E3.series’ Wire Color Insertion View. Display wire colors directly at their connector pin locations, giving technicians immediate access to critical assembly information.

Time to shed some light. First, conjure the Wire Color Insertion View in the database with symbols and text. Then summon it into your project to display color, gauge, wire ID, or other details that bring order to even the most terrifying connector layouts.

No more guessing in the dark. With wire information clearly displayed at each connector pin, technicians can work more confidently and reduce the risk of wiring errors during assembly.

Tangled in Terror: Solving Cable Protection Nightmares

Something sinister lurks among the branches of your harness. Each has a different diameter, and selecting cable protection means confronting a chilling question: Is that tubing too small, too large…or too full? Manual calculations and guesswork can haunt your design long after it reaches the shop floor.

But fear not! Harness Builder helps eliminate the uncertainty by automatically selecting cable protection based on branch diameter. Define tubing fill ratios to ward off another lurking horror: overfilled tubing that turns installation into a nightmare.

The spell extends to manufacturing. Harness Builder generates a complete cut list for the applied loom and protection materials, giving production teams clear instructions for preparing and cutting materials.

Banish the manual calculations, tame the tangled branches, and give manufacturing a fighting chance against the creatures of confusion. This Halloween, cable protection is one nightmare you can put to rest.

Reveal what Lies Beneath with Attribute Text Templates

Buried within your E3.series connection paths are important details about conductor names, gauges, colors, and more. Finding that information can require extra navigation. Experienced sages know a better way to reveal only the details you need, directly on the drawing.

Reveal wire data with attribute text template symbols in E3.series. These handy spells let you choose which connection path attributes appear, revealing the details readers need without unleashing every attribute lurking beneath the drawing or requiring extra clicks.

Choose the information to reveal, then place template symbols across multiple connection lines. The result? Clearer documentation, fewer clicks, and less time spent searching for hidden information.
