Five Years of Smart Cabinet Building: From Vision to Implementation

Menu

Five years after its launch, the Smart Cabinet Building (SCB) initiative has entered a new phase: what began as dialogue and initial orientation has evolved into concrete implementation projects across the industry.

achim-stirner-300x300Achim Stirner, Product Manager at Zuken, highlights the shift from theory to action: “What initially began as interest and early considerations is increasingly developing into concrete action.”

Many companies are leveraging the ongoing generational change as an opportunity to rethink established processes and strategically realign their production environments. Younger decision-makers—who have grown up with digital technologies—are accelerating investments in automation and end-to-end digital workflows.

From Concept to Measurable Results

The initiative is already delivering tangible results. Numerous projects have been successfully implemented in Germany and internationally. One notable example is a panel builder in North Rhine-Westphalia that restructured its entire production according to the SCB model, integrating digital and automated solutions step by step – achieving measurable gains in efficiency and process reliability.

Addressing Digital Continuity

A core industry challenge remains digital continuity across the value chain. Many panel builders still receive incomplete engineering data, often limited to PDFs or even printed documents. SCB addresses this by enabling the creation of a practical digital twin that provides sufficient manufacturing data – even when the input consists only of parts lists and connection lists.

Importantly, this approach lowers the entry barrier for companies without a dedicated engineering department. Structured work preparation processes can generate the required digital foundation for production.

Achim summarizes the initiative’s validation in the market: “This momentum confirms that our approach is addressing exactly the right issues.”

Five years on, Smart Cabinet Building has proven to be more than a concept – it is a scalable, practice-oriented framework that translates digital strategy into operational impact.
