Engineering Data Management Connects Engineering to Manufacturing

Menu

Manufacturing and engineering too often work in silos. Engineering data management for manufacturing helps the two teams collaborate with clarity and accuracy, ensuring both sides work from the same data.

DS-WEB works in conjunction with Zuken’s EDM solution, DS-E3, to provide web-based electrical design viewership with no software installation required. Manufacturing teams log in through a browser and instantly view engineering’s electrical design documents securely.

Miscommunication leads to errors and delays. When manufacturing doesn’t have access to the latest engineering documentation, they make assumptions. This disconnect costs time and money on the shop floor.

What is Engineering Data Management for Manufacturing?

DS-WEB: zero-install access that matches how techs work

DS-WEB is the web-accessible version of DS-E3’s WIP (work-in-progress) data management solution. With DS-WEB, non-design team members can access documentation created in DS-E3, including PDFs for project-level diagrams, subproject releases, and variant configurations.

DS-WEB in Action: Viewing Customer-Specific Data

Mike in Manufacturing just finished building harness 555555A, the lighting wiring for an aircraft. Mike proudly takes his harness to Teri in Testing. But when Teri, the tester, plugs it in, she realizes something is wrong. LED2 is not wired.

Teri calls Eric in Engineering.

Eric asks Teri, “Which customer configuration are you testing?”.

“Variant 365-320-500_Customer2,” Teri replies.

In years past, Eric would spend hours digging through files and compiling schematics for Customer2’s fleet configuration. But the company recently deployed DS-WEB.

Eric teaches Teri, “This will be quick. Grab your tablet and log into the web version of DS-E3.” Eric sends Teri the webpage, and Teri logs in with her company Windows account.

Teri and Mike look at the tablet together while standing next to the plane. They find the plane’s name, then the variant configuration. The schematic is right there, and shows Customer2’s configuration needs harness 555555B, not 555555A.

Mike asks Teri for the link, walks back to his desk, and pulls up all the necessary documentation on his tablet. With DS-WEB, he quickly accesses the correct documentation and gets back on track with no delays or confusion. This scenario shows how engineering data management for manufacturing eliminates wasted time and ensures shop floor teams always have the right variant in hand.

Why DS-WEB matters

Companies want a complete digital thread, not paper trails and email chains. DS-WEB brings manufacturing into the loop by providing:

Secure Access Control

  • Only the right people see the right files. When manufacturing needs to verify wiring details for a specific build, they simply log into DS-WEB.

Easy Project Navigation

  • Browse the project tree for the latest documentation. Technicians select the project and review all associated documents.

DS-WEB organizes electrical design files by project, configuration, and version to improve engineering data management for manufacturing teams.

Product line configuration management

  • EDM captures electrical detailed design data beyond traditional PDM capabilities. Engineers add or remove subsystems with DS-E3 to create custom builds. DS-E3 generates relevant documentation for each configuration. Using DS-WEB, all configurations are organized for manufacturing to find easily.

Why Choose DS-E3 and DS-WEB for Electrical Documentation?

DS-E3 and DS-WEB combined are powerful tools for electrical document management and secure web viewership. With controlled access, variant support, and easy document navigation, DS-E3, combined with DS-WEB, can streamline manufacturing product configuration viewership and complete your digital thread.
