Insert Cable

To add a new cable to the drawing in Project mode,

  • select Insert -> Cable on the Main Menu bar.

To add a cable to an overbraid component in DBE mode,

  • right-click on the component in the Database window and

  • select the Add Cable... command from the displayed context menu.

    The following dialog box apperas:

Note

The Device designation is reset to the predefined character, if the cable type is modified.

To use a manually defined Device designation and a cable type from the database, define the information in the following order:

  1. Select the desired cable type under Use predefined cable type.

  2. Specify the desired Device designation.

Insert Cable

The following options are only active in Project mode

Device Designation

Defines the device designation of the cable. The dialog automatically enters the pre-defined prefix (e.g. -W) and the next available sequential cable number (e.g. -99).

This is the device designation normally used for cables according to DIN 40719.

Higher Level Assignment

Defines the Higher Level Assignment of the cable to be used, selectable from a drop-down list.

All available higher level assignments in the project will be listed.

Location

Defines the Location of the cable to be used, selectable from a drop-down list.

All available locations in the project will be listed.

...as overbraid

Using this option, the new cable can be inserted as an overbraid.

By repeating cable insertion through this dialog, it's possible to add an overbraid to another overbraid or assembly, i.e. overbraids can be nested.

Create custom cable

This option allows you to add a new cable with the desired number of conductors and the corresponding conductor designations.

Note

This option is inactive in E3.schematic.

Number of conductors

The number of conductors can be defined by entering a number in the field or by using the arrows and . However, this number is limited to 9999.

Each individual conductor is given a number according to the number of conductors entered. The Number of Conductors field becomes inactive when changes are made to the makeup of the Cable in the Conductors section of the dialog.

Although it is now impossible to make changes, the correct number of conductors will still be displayed during modifications in the conductor list.

Conductors

The conductor names and the cable configuration can be defined dynamically in the Conductors section of the dialogbox.

Conductor names (numbers) can be modified by double-clicking on them or using the F2 key on the selected conductor.

To insert a new conductor click the Insert button .

To change the conductor arrangement select the desired conductor and move it up or down using the corresponding arrow buttons ( and ).

The names of the conductors and their correct order are shown.

As described above, the contents may be preset by defining the number of conductors in the Number of Conductors field.

The numeric values automatically entered can be changed as required. To do so, double-click on the desired conductor name and a new name can be entered. Existing names can be edited in the same manner.

It is also possible to immediately begin typing the conductor names without previously specifying the number of conductors.

To do so, the cursor must be positioned beneath the last entry in the list (using the mouse or Cursor Down key ) and the new conductor name can be entered.

The functions

  • adding a new conductor,

  • deleting a conductorand

  • moving a conductor

can also be activated using the two buttons at the top of the list box. Moreover, the Ins or Del keys can also be used for adding or deleting conductors.

To add or modify translatable conductor names, select the desired conductor name, press F2 and call the Translation Table dialog using the button.

In case of several languages, the 1st language defined for display is always used. During input of a translatable text, the 1st language is likewise used for validation of the name.

Only the following two options are active both in Project and DBE mode

Use predefined cable type

This option is used, when a cable type or overbraid already exists in project or when an existing cable type is to be used as basis for a new cable.

After activating the option the drop-down list becomes active and displays all cable types available in the project and in the database for selection. When the ...as overbraid option was checked first, the list shows all overbraids available in the database.

In DBE mode, upon defining an overbraid, this option is automatically activated selecting the Add Cable... command. The drop-down list displays all cable types available in the database.

Cable type version

When selecting a valid cable type from the selection list, a valid version will be displayed. If several versions of the cable type exist, they will also be displayed and can be chosen from the list.
