Tabular terminal editor
The tabular editing functionality has been extended to allow terminal strips for a whole project to be managed from within a table in a single window. Users may make changes to terminal connections directly from within the table. The placement column shows the current placement in panel layout using colors. A global search may be carried out to filter and search for terminal connections.
Users will benefit from increased productivity through being able to view a whole project in the table, particularly with medium to large sized projects, as there is no need to navigate within the design. The design is modified automatically following changes. Sorting within the terminal, or automatic adjustment after making changes such as swapping components or reordering terminal strips, is now possible. Integration with manufacturers’ configuration tools makes configuring and ordering strips easier.
Dynamic block functionality
Terminals, connectors and any devices can now be placed inside a block making blocks functional. Hierarchy within a block is unique to E3.series and offers many productivity benefits, such as maximizing design reuse.
To define a dynamic block within a project simply drag components or symbols from the library onto block, draw internal connections or connections to the outside, and create hierarchies by placing hierarchy blocks. The root block is displayed in the tree, with all devices or symbols belonging to the block displayed underneath in a structured manner.
Further automation functions in panel layout
Features include automatic placement optimization when inserting, changing or deleting components; placing complete preconfigured terminal strips; and sorting terminal blocks according to customer criteria, as well as defining cabinet layout models for block components in the library. This enhances rack-based cabinet layout with predefined slots.
New Multi-User environment
Collaborating on designs is now easier with an enhanced multi-user, real-time environment. Users can work simultaneously on one sheet and instantly see in the sheet tree if another user has opened the sheet. By incorporating the latest collaboration technology, including Oracle updates, all objects can now be accessed online and concurrent design is achieved without needing to book out sheets. A significant reduction in multi-user collisions is achieved and reports can be run at any time.
Users will experience optimized communication, with dynamic package sizes (depending on the bandwidth) and faster first opening of projects.
New schematic auto routing modes
A new automatic connect and auto-route function significantly reduces routing time and effort. Following component selection, connections are automatically cut to allow repositioning, then elements are automatically moved and once placed, connections are re-routed back. This gives users a fluid experience and confidence that they can try design alternatives without worrying about losing connections.
Autorouter settings for least routing effort
The autorouter settings may be adjusted to achieve the desired router results, with several routing modes available. In placement mode three setting options are available for all symbol types. The neatest, most efficient routing pattern can be worked out using a cost calculation to evaluate the routing effort based on the number of connections or symbols crossed, or direction changes.
Automatic component move
Moving components in E3.series 2016 now is now enhanced with a more interactive, live-feel, user environment. The automatic routing of cables in E³.panel+ offers companies a way of significantly increasing their productivity during control cabinet development. Auto-routing is available for the initial installation of cables after component placement as well as for modifications, such as the efficient implementation of individual components and support signals. As soon as a component is moved, the surrounding components move around to fill the space. This means that when the size, number or position of a device is changed in any way, the placement in E³.panel is updated.
Placement move/optimization works after:
- Automatic placement optimization when inserting, changing or deleting components
- Placing complete preconfigured terminal strips, sorting of terminal blocks according to customer criteria
- Sorting of terminal strips
- Adding or deleting devices to/from terminal strips or mounting rails
- Importing components, e.g. from 3rd party terminal configurators
- Allocation of 3D designs for components based on manufacturer’s descriptions where only one block diagram is available. Automatic selection of the appropriate connector offers automatic wiring of the control cabinet with a reduction in the risk of error by manual selection.

Automatic wiring improvements
A visual review can be made using a new graphical comparison functionality which allows users to compare two project versions and review items such as:
- Deleted/added sheets
- Deleted/added/moved elements
- Changed texts
Changes are easily identified by colored highlighting, clouds surrounding changes and strike-out marks. Comparison rules are configurable.
