Failure Mode & Effect Analysis (FMEA)

The importance of reliability testing, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing, failure mode effect and analysis (FMEA); make electronic parts and test/measurement tools fundamental to the journey of building your own electronics project.

It is important to consider during design of electronic circuits the recommended criteria of FMEA in the area of stress when derating electrical and electronics parts or components, and the indication of the maximum application stress values. Derating increases the margin of safety between part design limits and the allowable applied stresses, providing extra protection for part tolerances, while decreasing part degradation rates - increasing the life expectancy of a part. The part's margin of safety to both the threshold and time  dependent stresses, are generally unknown. Therefore parts should be derated to the maximum extent, taking into account the environment the parts are operating within. During derating, it is important to consider the manufacturer defined part environmental specifications and the operating conditions of the application, then apply the derating factors so as not to exceed the maximum allowable application stresses set forth.
